The FYM Zone will feature around 10 articles from Frontiers for the Young Minds. Teachers will tell their students to read your articles and prepare questions for a text-based Chat in the FYM Zone. In June we’ll schedule one Open Chat for any registered students and invite teachers to request Chats just for their classes at a mutually suitable time.
Students will ask follow-up questions to be answered after the Chat.
Why take part:
To help the next generation better understand how science is done.
By taking part you’ll also:
- develop communication skills
- gain a fresh perspective on your work
- find out what young people think about science
Everything happens online. Take part from the office or at home, at times that suit your schedule.

The format
You create an online profile which students can read ahead of your Chat. You’ll engage engage directly with classes in live Chats where you will be on Zoom, so you can answer in real time the text-based questions the students ask.
“One of the most rewarding, fulfilling and thought-provoking periods I have had in science.” – Deepak, medical researcherLive Chats with classes
Live Chats last 40 minutes.
They take place on our text-based platform. We will invite you to a Zoom call. The video feed will be added to the live Chat. That means students can ask questions in real-time text format, and you can reply via the video call. All you’ll need is video/audio on your computer.
Chats are fast paced and fun. For the Frontiers for Young Minds Zone, authors should expect to take part in about 2 Chats a week across the 4-week activity.
Time needed
The time commitment is flexible.
The activity is designed to fit around your normal schedule. Live Chats last 40 minutes and generally run during school hours (8.30am to 4pm GMT+1).

Questions students ask
I’m a Scientist is a student-led activity. While the focus will be on your article, students can ask anything they like. There could be questions about you, your article, and science in general.
All questions and live Chats are moderated by our moderation team, who are there to help and support you throughout the activity.
At the end of an activity, we share Zone Reports with useful statistics and feedback which you can share with your management or use in your professional portfolio.
Equipment you need
You need a computer or other device with internet access.
The site is run through a web browser. The Chats will require audio and video. We will use Zoom, so if you have an account you can use that, but if not, you’ll be able to access from your browser. You will need to make sure you have your video and microphone set up before this happens.
Who can apply?
